Malacca Malaysia Tourist Attractions

Malacca is one of the most visited destinations in Malaysia with its easy access from Kuala Lumpur by bus or car.

Malacca is a UNESCO heritage declared city with 500 years of rich colonial history. Some of the building in the old quarters of the town bears witness to some early occupations by Portuguese, Dutch and British.

The city has seen a spate of development in the last 10 years and is becoming a popular place to stay for ex-pats and locals alike.

A number of quality luxury and boutique hotels have sprung up to cater to large crowds that visit Malacca City. The hotel room rates still stay very low as compared to other locations across Malaysia.

Here is a list of some of the major attractions in Malacca

Famosa Fortress

A Famosa fortress was an early fortification in the 16th century by the Portuguese against foreign invasion. A wall from the Fortress Still survives with a plaque bearing its history. A step of stairs near the fortress walls leads to the top of the hill overlooking the Strait of Malacca and the Jonker Walk area of the city. A number of stone slabs bear memorial to the interesting history of the area. This part of the town is currently undergoing restorations.

Studthuys

Studthuys

Studthuys, a red coloured building with the clock tower is the first structure you notice once you enter Malacca. The building was the administrative capital of Malacca through the centuries and was constructed by Dutch in 1650. Studthuys is typical of Dutch colonial architecture. Currently, the site has a museum with a large collection of artifacts.

The best way to explore this area is to catch a decorated rickshaw from Dataran Phalawan Shopping Malls. The ride costs RM 15. These rickshaws are decorated to various themes from Disney movies and look very appealing to children.

YOu can taste local delights in the evening, buy souvenirs from one of many stores along the street or enjoy local Nyonya cuisine.
