Exploring Geogertown Penang in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain

Location: Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia
I finally decided to explore the food of Penang in the footsteps of Anthony Bourdain. I have heard a lot about Nonya food as well as Nasi Kandhar. The various influences are brought about by traders and settlers coming from various parts of the world. Line Clear claims to be open 24 hours a day and sell the best Nasi Kandhar in Georgetown. The place is not hard to find. A few minutes walk from 1 Penang Raod will bring you to a narrow alley. It is nothing fancy. A simple roadside restaurant that stays quite crowded throughout the day. Make sure you have good look at the menu before you place the order because there are lots of options and you might be tempted to order more than you can eat.

If you are in the mood for good Indian restaurants stop by at Kashmir which is on the left-hand side if you are walking down Penang Road. Line Clear is another 100 yards from Kashmir inside an alley. If you are driving, I suggest you park your car in the parking behind line clear and you will see an arrow pointing to the restaurants.

Another interesting place to visit in this area is the Eastern and Oriental Hotel which has quite a bit of history to its credit. The building is absolutely amazing and well preserved. You can feel the cool air walking through wide corridors decorated with historical portraits. The original entrance to the hotel is still preserved in its original design. Inside the main entrance, you will observe a beautiful dome where you can hear your own echo if you speak aloud. At the tourist reception desk, you will find a very informative guide who is keen to share all the historical information with you. The main hall is also adorned with pictures of notable Hollywood stars who stayed at this establishment.

The hotels have a nice bar and a couple of cosy restaurants and coffee shops. Sarkies restaurant offers a generous buffet and dinner menu priced at around 100RM.

1 Penang Street is lit with beautiful multi-coloured lights and full of noise and crowd till late hours of the night. Make sure you try you visit Slippery Senoritas, one of the oldest clubs in the town.

The turnover is quick. If you are a slow eater you will notice a lot of people come and go. For locals, it's regular everyday food. The food is fresh and spicy. Chicken well-cooked, goat a little chewy like most of the places in Malaysia, fish-cakes and grey makes a perfect Nasi Kahndar (Arab Indian cooking style). You can add your own side dishes from meats, seafood, deep-fried chicken and vegetables. The food is accompanied by a number of local drinks including iced teas.
